With progress of Aikido training, an interest in dance has been growing. (No, not only dance but more in 'human-being' itself.) In partnered ballroom dance, rather than in single dance. Watching each dancers with an axis of body and the movements which make themselves elegant, you can see that dancing and martial arts have many commom things. And like Aikido, it also pursues 'harmony' between partners.
볼룸댄스에 대한 관심이 더 증폭된 계기는 작년에 케이블에서 즐겨 보았던 '유 캔 댄스?'라는 프로그램. 다양한 분야의 댄서들이 각자 다른 분야의 댄스를 1주일간 배워서 경연하는 프로그램이었는데, 신기한 것이, 볼룸댄서들은 브레이크 댄스나 현대 재즈댄스를 '상대적으로' 쉽게 소화해내는데 반해, 그 반대의 경우는 꽤나 고전하는 것을 보았다. 인간의 움직임이란 것이 공통점을 내포하고 있다는 것을 전제로 한다면, 볼룸댄스의 움직임에 그러한 공통분모가 더 많이 들어가있는 것은 아닐까? 하는 생각이 들었다.
Last year after watching the cable TV show '(so you really think)You can Dance?', the interest in ballroom dance got bigger. Interestingly, ballroom dancers realatively could do mordern dances like brake or jazz dance, but the opposite had rather a hard time. Considering humabody movements of all-over area have common fundermentals, I think ballroom dances have more of those than modern dances.
이곳 딜리에서 우연히 살사댄스의 기본을 배워보기도 하다가, 'Take the Lead'란 영화를 보게 되었다. 안토니오 반데라스가 연기하는 피에르 듀래인이란 댄서가 볼룸댄스로 문제아들을 교화시키는 천편일률적인 내용의 영화이지만 간만에 눈을 떼지 못하고 푹 빠져 버렸다.
So I had a chance to learn basic of Salsa, and now watched the movie 'Take the Lead'. Pierre Duilaine, portraited by Antonio Banderas, who educates trouble-makers with ballroom dance. Very stereotyped movie, but worth to spend your time with.
인간의 움직임이란 면에서도 흥미로운 볼거리였지만, 주인공의 입을 통해 나오는 말들이 합기도(아이키도)의 수련에도 그대로 적용되는 것들이어서다.
I enjoyed movements of human bodies but also the quotes from the lips of the protagonist. Those can be directly connected to Aikido practise.

"The message is still the same. The children learn ballroom dancing, yes; but the real thing they are learning are the transferable skills of decorum, etiquette, being polite with each other, respect, dignity. All of these things they are learning when they really need them, so I had no qualms with it being changed to high school. I don't really care if you're a 10-year old or 17-year old (that) when you're 25 that you remember the steps, but the transferable skills of being polite and knowing how to treat another human being is what my message is all about." ? Maybe I will join the ballroom dance class after going back to Korea.
(Though my wife wants to play squash..)
